Best make-up brushes (and the one type of brush no woman should be without)
If you're lost in a world of duo fibres, vibrating ‘stippling’ brushes and beauty tools that look more paddles than product-pasters, have no fear. We’re here with the definitive list to 2019’s best make-up brushes.
Whether you’re looking to buy a make-up artist-worthy collection or a foundation brush that will do all the hard work for you, we’ve put the industry’s best-selling beauty tools to the test to find the top of the shops.
All brushes were tested using the same make-up (listed below) in the same manner. Each brush was cleaned thoroughly and re-tested to quality check and ensure there would be no shedding.
1. B. make-up brushes
£5.99 and up, Superdrug
Why? They are the best vegan make-up brushes
B.’s individually-sold range of make-up brushes forgo animal hairs for artist-quality Taklon (a vegan-friendly synthetic), bringing handcrafted and conscious quality to each of the twelve tools.
At price points you’ll barely blink over, the Superdrug-sold selection ticks every box you’d hope a luxury line would; each brush is soft, durable and applies make-up far better than you’d be able to without it.
My personal highlights of the collection are the Fan Brush and Blending Brush. The Fan Brush, pictured, is unbelievably soft and can plant the lightest touch of a bold highlighter or blush with ease. Inherently multi-functional, it also lifts away extra product or fallen eyeshadow in seconds.
The B. Blending Brush is a similarly versatile favourite. Its flat, short head is incredibly dense and blends everything – cream foundation, heavy powders, liquid bronzer, etc – with ease. I’ve regularly used it to place and blend out a natural contour line in a rush.
The cleverly-angled Eye Contour Brush also sets up a smoky eye in seconds.
2. Jane Iredale The Retractable Handi
Why? It is the best powder brush around
Jane Iredale The Retractable Handi
The ‘Retractable’ is identical to the brand’s trademarked Handi Brush – a cult beauty favourite in its own right – only portable.
When unveiled from its purse-friendly rose gold casing, the brush’s silky soft bristles apply pressed and mineral powders so naturally the products end up looking a second skin. Just its predecessor.
The powder brush is quite simply designed to perfection and a pleasure to use. So much so I’ve started brushing excess powder over my clavicle for a micro morning massage.
Tip: the bristles take a good 24 hours to dry after being washed, so factor this in to your weekly clean.
3. Magnitone BlendUp Vibra-Sonic Makeup Brush
Why? Its a phenomenal foundation brush – with a difference
Magnitone London's BlendUp! Vibra-Sonic vibrating makeup brush
This vibrating make-up brush is the ideal innovation for cream and liquid foundation lovers.
Though it is a well-designed brush in its own right, the BlendUp’s added vibrating mode helps your foundation blend and blur pores to practical invisibility.
With over 250 micro-movements per second, the brush seems to airbrush skin (though it technically does the exact opposite) in seconds and blend unwanted streaks or edges away before they could ever appear.
I recommend applying your moisturiser or primer with the brush before foundation (to stimulate the skin), using a light hand (a little goes a long way), and doing a daily soap spruce on its self-cleaning mode (activated by holding the power button for three seconds).
A two-hour USB charge offers roughly 100 minutes of use, so most people will only have to charge the brush once or twice a month.
4. Brushworks High Definition Unicorn Sets
£19 and up, Tesco
Why? You can purchase high-quality brushes with your weekly shop
Unicorn make-up brushes from Brush Works
Brushworks’ latest collection – featuring two ‘HD’ Unicorn Makeup brush sets for face and eyes – does far more than jump on the unicorn-shaped bandwagon.
Though their holographic hues could suggest the make-up brushes are geared for a younger or more experimental customer, the hand-crafted and cruelty-free brush sets pack a professional punch.
The Face Set features a Buffing Brush (for powder), a Tapered Contour & Highlighter Brush, a Flat Foundation Brush, and a Precision Detailer & Concealer Brush – literally everything you might need for a daily face. For £20. I've used the Flat brush to apply both foundation and under-eye concealer as it is smaller than most foundation brushes and can easily pack product into tiny corners.
The Eye and Brow Set, a pound cheaper at £19, consists of five brushes but suffers – slightly – from not listing their functions on the brushes themselves. It is easy to assume one would be used for shading, blending, smudging, liner and brows (respectively), but those who aren’t familiar with traditional brush shapes and densities could get confused.
Nonetheless, these brushes are fabulously affordable and do exactly what they’re supposed to. The smudging brush, in particular, is perfect for light under-eye shadow linger application and really helps to open up the eye.
5. Artis Elite 5 Brush Set
£53, Space NK
Why? They are the best of the best
Surprisingly, those paddle brushes you've seen people beating their faces with on Instagram are not just a gimmick.
There are a handful of companies cutting their existing brushes into shape to capitalize on the trend, sure, but a handful of brushes – this set from Artis – are the real deal.
Buried in the bandwagon, these brushes were actually created by an accomplished make-up artist who realised – after over 30 years training thousands of make-up artists to paint the faces of others – that consumers needed different kind of brushes to apply their own make-up best.
The mostly-flat brushes are a DIY dream; the animal-friendly CosmeFibre bristles offer superior blending (genuinely requiring next to no product for flawless application) and the proprietary metal alloy handles (similar to what is used in the manufacture of luxury car engines) are a pleasure to paddle with.
Their best-sellers are also all available – at a fraction of their cost – in The Elite 5 Brush Set.
The full-face kit includes the Oval 7 (best for foundation, blush & contour), Oval 4 (concealer brush of the Beauty Gods).
Oval 3 (eye makeup), Linear 1 (double duty for eyeliner and brows), and Circle 1R (which I love for highlighter but can be used for lip colour, eye shadow, spot concealing and everything in between).
6. Blank Canvas MagniMarble make-up brush set
£85, Beauty Bay
Why? It is the best make-up brush set to gift
The magnetic marble make-up set
I believe good brushes are imperative to good make-up and, in turn, that good-looking brush sets are imperative to a good morning routine. And so does lesser-known (but high-performing) make-up brush company Blank Canvas.
Their MagniMarble make-up brush set might just be the first thing that makes me smile in the morning. Every multi-use brush in this ten-piece collection has a magnetic base which snaps to its pole-opposed frame after use for display.
I have, however obsessive-compulsively, stood my favourite four brushes (MF56 for foundation, MF48 for concealer, MF47 for powder, and MF35 for contour) upright on the left side of the frame in the order I use them for daily use. On the other side, I’ve ‘hung’ the other brushes in the order I’m ly to use them; the ME45 (a lovely, fluffy eyeshadow brush – but I don’t wear shadow every day).
Overall, the set is unique, high quality and phenomenal value.
7. Zoeva Rose Golden Luxury Brush Set – Volume 2
£65, Cult Beauty
Why? It has every brush you need for every day
Zoeva Rose Golden Volume 2
This luxe make-up brush set provides a rare opportunity to judge a very promising book by its cover.
The acclaimed brush brand’s ‘Rose Golden’ Volume 2 set streamlines your cosmetic comrades into eight beautiful pieces – each of which is as effective as it is aesthetically pleasing. With a matching Pinterest-perfect beauty bag, to boot.
Inside, you have three brushes for your skin (foundation, contour, and a blush/powder) and five for defining and lining your eyes and brows. All of which are wooden-handled and soft as they come.
From left to right, we have the 104 Buffer (blending everything from cream to powder), the 109 Luxe Face Paint (a dense dream for contouring), the 126 Luxe Cheek Finish (which doubles up as a fluffy setting powder brush), the 226 Smudger (for blending eyeshadow at the lash line), the 228 Luxe Crease (for the crease, naturally), the 234 Luxe Smoky Shader (my favourite for all over lid colour), the 317 Wing Liner (my personal favourite as the brush is thinner than most of its variety and makes kitten eyes foolproof), and the 322 Brow Line (for natural-looking hair strokes using cream and powder eyebrow products).
Make-up used to test all brushes above:
Foundation brushes – Lush Magical Moringa and Slap Stick
Concealer brushes – Lush Trix Stick
Powder brushes – Lush Emotional Brilliance Powder
Contour brushes – Lush Charisma Skin Tint
Blush/bronzer brushes – Anastasia Beverley Hills Powder Bronzer
Eyeshadow brushes – Huda Beauty The New Nude Eyeshadow Palette
Eyeliner brushes – Bobbi Brown Longwear Gel Eyeliner
Highlighter brushes – Illamasqua Beyond Powder in OMG
Q&A with Spice Girls make-up artist, Karin Darnell
Who better to speak to than make-up artist of make-up artists, Karin Darnell, for the low-down on make-up brushes? Karin was make-up artist to the Spice Girls for the duration of their record-breaking careers (Spiced and individually) and has long-standing working relationships with the s of Jessie J, Cheryl and Rihanna (Karin has worked on over twelve videos and two movies for Riri alone).
“Make up brushes are one of the most important key items in any make-up artist's kit,” she says. “Spending time trying out different brands can go a long way in terms of getting the most your make-up.”
Make-up artist Karin Darnell (far left) with the Spice Girls in the 90sCredit:Karin Darnell
“I would say a stippling brush is a make-up artist must-have as it is extremely versatile and can be used for so many different things; contouring, blending and highlighting to name a few!”
“Flat fibre fan brushes are definitely underrated in my eyes. It’s fan shape works extremely well for blending powders and pigments and it is a great multi-tasker brush.
“With this brush there is no over-bronzing or over-highlighting. And while you can use many kinds of brushes to knock off fallout from eyeshadow, this is also the best brush to lightly fling away particles without causing streaks.”
How often should you clean make-up brushes – and how?
“Make-up brushes should be washed with a baby shampoo or liquid hand soap at least every month – or more often to get rid of any bacteria. They need to be cleaned regularly as you pass on bacteria from brushes on to your face which, in time, can cause skin issues, spots and blackheads.”
“It is important to clean them in lukewarm water rather than boiling hot water as brush bristles tend to fall out if you do. Rinse them well, squeezing out any excess water.
“I’d also recommend spraying brushes weekly with an antibacterial cleaning spray and drying with a tissue to keep them in their best condition.”
Beauty Trend Spotting: The Dark Lip
The dark, vampy lip was out in full force at the Met Costume Institute Gala in New York City last week.
Dark, rich, wine-stained lips were sported by Kate Bosworth, Jessica Alba , Lana del Rey and Camilla Belle proving that the goth-inspired, Rooney Mara effect is going to be hanging around a little while longer.
But Pat McGrath, the make-up artist on ‘The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo’ film, has toned down the severity for this season making it a bit more wearable.
She sent statement lips down the runways at the YSL, Gucci and Nina Ricci Fall 2012 shows and explained the look as: “A little bit Dante Gabriel Rosetti…It’s all about the bleached eyebrows and slightly paled-out skin with a dark lip—it’s ethereal, but dark and strong.”
To achieve the perfect dark lip McGrath recommends layering lipliner and lipstick over concealer. Using a cover-up will erase your natural lip hue and create a blank canvas for the perfect stand-out lip.
“Brush a light layer of concealer over lip balm, blending with your finger, then line and color in the lips with a lipliner,” says McGrath.
“Next, apply your shade of choice, blot with tissue, dust with a light bit of translucent powder, and add a second layer of lipstick for superior, longwearing coverage.” For full-on glamour, McGrath suggests pumping up shine with a touch of clear gloss.
Flawless skin is the starting point for this bold look. Make Up For Ever HD Invisible cover foundation will provide a smooth, even canvas and Laura Mercier Secret Camouflage Concealer should mask any dark spots or redness.
Keep the cheeks bare and eyes simple.
If you have fine brows and you’re feeling a bit edgy, give them little dust with some translucent powder, MAC Prep + Prime Transparent Finishing Powder should do the trick, the rest should follow Bosworth’s lead and go for a gorgeously groomed full brow.
After prepping lips, start colouring in. Plummy Clinique Quickliner for lips 07 is the perfect match for any dark, wine coloured lipstick but Lipstick Queen Silicone Invisible Liner is a fool-proof option for those with a problem staying inside the lines.
Tom Ford Private Blend Lip Color in Black Orchid, Lipstick Queen Sinner in Wine and 17 Lasting Fix Lipstick in New Black are all perfectly vampish shades.
Finish off with a slick of DuWop Lip Venom 2nd Sin – a clear gloss that will not only add shine but also plumps the lips.

The best natural makeup you can buy
Insider Picks writes about products and services to help you navigate when shopping online. Insider Inc. receives a commission from our affiliate partners when you buy through our links, but our reporting and recommendations are always independent and objective.
- When it comes to natural makeup, it’s hard to know which brands you can actually trust.
- Many products claim to be natural but contain potentially harmful or irritating synthetic ingredients.
- For a high-performance makeup range that’s formulated from natural, organic, and non-toxic ingredients, Jane Iredale is our top pick.
Natural beauty has exploded in the past few years. Everyone is talking about “clean beauty” as people have become more aware of the potentially adverse effects of certain synthetic chemicals that are often found in makeup. The more careful people become about what they put on their skin, the more popular natural makeup has become.
The biggest difference between “natural“ and “synthetic” (or traditional) makeup is the ingredients. Most synthetic makeup products contain chemicals parabens, phthalates, and sulfates, which can irritate skin.
But unfortunately, due to lack of regulation in the US beauty industry, many products labeled “natural” actually still contain these chemicals.
Even when doing our research, we found it wasn’t always easy to get definitive answers on exactly what ingredients were used by some brands.
The one thing that is more defined is that products cannot be labeled “organic” unless they’re USDA Organic-certified, which means formulated with at least 95% organic ingredients that were grown and produced without synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, hormones, or antibiotics, and formulated without GMOs, toxic chemicals, parabens, synthetic fragrances, or nanoparticles. However, in California products can be labeled “organic” if they are made with just 70% organic ingredients.
The ingredients list of makeup products can be overwhelming, and it’s often in very small print. An easy way to check product safety is to visit the EWG Skin Deep Cosmetics Database and verify the safety ratings of more than 73,000 beauty products.

One of the biggest concerns with natural makeup has been poor quality and effectiveness. However, thanks to the increase in shopper demand, there’s a new generation of makeup brands with bigger and better ranges, and highly effective products formulated with safe and natural ingredients.
I was initially very skeptical about how good natural makeup could be, but after reading about irritating ingredients found in regular makeup and testing a wide range of natural products myself, I’ve converted. With our opinions backed up by beauty experts and buyers, we’ve come up with the best natural makeup brands you can trust.
Here are the best natural makeups you can buy:
Updated 6/14/19 by Jada Wong: Updated copy, formatting, links, and prices.

Jane Iredale is a line of mineral makeup formulated with high quality, natural ingredients designed to nourish the skin and enhance its natural beauty. The company is known for its multitasking products and wearable shades. The products are free of perfume, alcohol, synthetic chemicals, and artificial dyes. The makeup is also cruelty-free.
We tested the entire makeup line to see if it lived up to the hype, and the Amazing Base Loose Mineral Powder ($46) is now one of my favorite foundations. This multitasking product comes in 12 shades and works as a foundation, concealer, and sunscreen with SPF 20, plus it soothes your skin and is water-resistant. I loved the coverage and it didn’t irritate my sensitive skin.
The Longest Lash Mascara ($35) comes in a squeezable tube and adds volume and length. The Eyeliner Pencil ($17) comes in seven wearable colors and glides on smoothly.
The Pure Moist Lipstick ($25) is also amazing and has a subtle fruit scent. Available in 27 colors, it combines powerful pigments with nourishing natural oils avocado and jojoba and fruit extracts pomegranate. I love the PurePressed Blush ($30), a mineral blush that comes in 12 gorgeous colors and has great staying power.
It’s not just us who think Jane Iredale products are amazing. The makeup line gets great praise on The Good Trade, The Trendspotter, and Natural Living Ideas. The makeup is hugely popular with Amazon shoppers and Nordstrom buyers too the high number of reviews on many products.
Pros: Free of parabens, sulfates, and phthalates, oil-free, certified cruelty-free, vegan, suitable for sensitive skin, wide range of products and makeup shades
The best non-toxic makeup brand
Foto: sourceRMS Beauty
RMS Beauty is a clean beauty brand that prides itself on the simplicity of its makeup products. The makeup is formulated with unrefined raw, food grade, and organic ingredients, and it’s free of toxic chemicals and artificial preservatives. It also bears the “Clean at Sephora” seal which means products are made without certain ingredients, which you can see the full list here.
The award-winning “Un” Cover-Up Concealer/Foundation ($36) can be used – you guessed it – as a light foundation or concealer, and it comes in 16 shades. It evened out my skin tone well. Makeup artists and celebrities swear by the Living Luminizer ($38), and I agree that it’s a must-have for your makeup bag.
The Volumizing Mascara ($28) is good for sensitive eyes. Some shoppers said that it doesn’t give much volume, but I added a couple more coats and it built up nicely.
The Wild With Desire Lipstick ($28) is also great and comes in 15 beautiful shades. I was impressed with the high color from the rich pigments. For lips and cheeks, the Lip2Cheek ($36), which is available in nine shades ranging from Blush Nude to Deep Berry, is also very popular. I love the natural effect it produces.
In addition to be being highly rated by She Knows, Refinery29, and Allure, Sephora shoppers give the brand glowing reviews across the board.
Pros: Non-toxic, cruelty-free, gluten-free, no artificial preservatives, GMO, “Clean at Sephora” seal
Cons: Pricey, mascara might not be as voluminous as expected
The best cruelty-free makeup brand
Foto: sourceMineral Fusion
Mineral Fusion combines pharmaceutical grade minerals, antioxidants, natural ingredients, and the latest technologies to provide makeup that is safe, protective, and effective. All the products are Leaping Bunny-certified, which means they’re cruelty-free. They are also free from parabens, gluten, artificial colors, phthalates, and other harsh ingredients.
The highly-rated Pressed Powder Foundation ($22.21) comes in 15 shades and is amazing. You can build it up where you want more coverage, and it has a matte finish. I love the Concealer ($17.84), a creamy duo that comes in four color options and is great for blemishes and dark under-eye circles.
The Lengthening Mascara ($14.81) is a rich, gentle formula that made my lashes look longer and fuller. The Eye Liner ($14.06) was soft and easy to apply.
The Mineral Fusion Lip Stick ($14.54) is now my new favorite lipstick. It comes in 15 colors and contains vitamin E and fruit oils to moisturize. There is also a fabulous 3-in-1 Color Stick ($14.60) for cheeks, eyes, and lips that comes in four shades. My favorite shade is Terra Cotta.
Mineral Fusion is rated the top mineral makeup brand on Best Reviews and is featured on Project Grace as a great cruelty-free brand, though it does point out the brand’s limited range of colors. Shades are wearable and pretty, but not the most exciting as there aren’t any bold blues or bright purples to play with.
Pros: Certified cruelty-free, vegan, gluten-free, made with non-toxic ingredients, great for all skin types
Cons: Can be hard to find in stores
The best organic makeup brand
LA-based Ilia Beauty escapes the conventions of organic and natural beauty, and is highly rated by beauty experts and buyers a for combining natural beauty with bold pigments and products.
It was started in 2011 by Sasha Pavsic, and not only do the makeup products contain up to 85% organic ingredients, their effectiveness rivals many traditional brands. Note that this means products are made with organic and natural products, so you’ll have to check ingredients accordingly; I was fine with the combination of the two.
The True Skin Serum Foundation ($54) comes in 18 shades, and nourished my skin with aloe leaf juice and jojoba oil while evening out my skin. The Mascara ($28) added volume and length, but still looked natural on my lashes.
The Pure Eyeliner ($24) is available in four colors and is buildable depending how dramatic or natural of look you . However, it did smudge a little after wearing it for a few hours. Both are great for sensitive eyes.
The Tinted Lip Conditioner ($28) comes in 16 stunning colors and is basically a lipstick that feels a balm or lip treatment instead. It’s beautifully creamy with a semi-matte, natural finish and stayed on my lips for a long time, moisturizing them too with olive oil and vitamin E.
I also loved the Multi-Stick ($34) for lips, cheeks, and eyes. It comes in eight colors but I think it’s more suited for lips and cheeks than eyes as the color families are orange, pink, and berry.
We’re not the only ones who love Ilia Beauty. Publications Allure, Huffington Post, and The Trendspotter all give rave reviews, and the brand gets good reviews in general Sephora.
Pros: Made with up to 85% organic ingredients, certified cruelty-free, vegan, great for sensitive skin
The best affordable natural makeup brand
Foto: sourceBurt’s Bees
The choice is still pretty limited when it comes to affordable, natural makeup, however, we absolutely love Burt’s Bees. This iconic brand may be famous for its lip balms, but it has developed a superb, affordable makeup range that’s simple, natural, and socially responsible.
Ingredients are 98.9% natural and nourishing, fruit oils, honey, and vitamin E. 7 No Muss, No Fuss Makeup Hacks – Hautelist
We all have those lazy days, where just the thought of opening our makeup case makes us want to crawl back into bed. Some girls may get excited at the thought of makeup but most of us do not wish to spend time or money on cosmetics.
So, if you’re a girl who does not wish to invest in makeup or you’re running late and need a quick solution to your puffy eyes and blemishes, scroll down for some hassle-free solutions.
These tricks will get you up and home in fifteen minutes looking your gorgeous best!
Chose BB/CC creams over foundation
Applying foundation evenly and perfectly is a difficult task so why not just skip it entirely? Replace your foundation with a BB or CC cream.
They are light, easy to apply and give just enough coverage to make you look radiant. These creams also moisturize your skin and those with an SPF protect your skin from the damaging rays of the sun.
Do not forget to carry a compact in case you need to touch-up.
Concealing your dark circles or blemishes may seem annoying and time consuming. Your BB cream is a quick fix that can go a long way. Just dab a bit on the spot and use a powder brush to add on some foundation powder. Be sure to blend it well so it doesn’t look patchy. An easy way to reduce puffiness is to rub an ice cube all over your face, concentrating on your under eye area.
Invest in lipsticks
Did you know that you could achieve a full face of makeup with just a stick of lip colour? Here’s how.
Contour your face with a brown or dark coloured lipstick that matches your skin tone. Add blush using a pink or light coloured lip colour. Make sure not to add too much due to its creamy texture.
A lipstick of your choice can also be used as eye shadow. Glossy eye shadows are trending, so bring out your glossy lip stains and put them to the test. To highlight your face, a clear lip balm should suffice.
Dab on on areas you would to accentuate.
Lip liners are understated heroes
Do not the feeling of lipstick on your lips? Or do you not wish to spend time perfecting that cupid’s bow? Fill in your lip with a lip liner pencil. It lasts longer, is easier to use and never gets on your teeth. It’s a win-win-win. For a more glossy look, apply a tinted or clear lip balm over your liner.
Work your brows
Skip all the gels and brow powders with their angled brushes and what not, and invest in a good brow pencil. Its perfect for filling up your brows or even outlining them with minimum effort. Thick and sharp brows add structure to your face and make your look flawless.
Line your lashes
We get how hard it is to perfect a winged tip in less than five minutes [no, do not try doing it in the car]. Avoid looking a raccoon and just go minimal. Line your lower waterline with a nude or white liner.
If you wish you could add a dark colour to your lower lash line and smudge it out with your fingertips to create a smokey effect. As for your upper lash line, master the art of tight lining and line your upper water line with a dark colour.
This will create the effect of fuller lashes and widen your eyes. Its simple and easy. Trust us, it will be your go-to look.
Mascara is a must
If eye liner is not your preference, try mascara instead. Concentrate the mascara at the root of your lashes [both upper and lower] to create the effect of fuller lashes. This trick instantly brightens your face, making your look fresh. On days when the no-makeup look feels best, try curling your lashes and adding mascara just to the tips. This too will create volume.
